A Call to Portrait Artists - Gay American Heroes Rainbow Memorial Project
About the Foundation: The Gay American Heroes Foundation, based out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, gives a broader voice to the family and friends of victims of LGBT hate crime murders and strives to work constructively with local officials, law enforcement, and service organizations to provide counseling, outreach, and education.
The Gay American Heroes Foundation is creating “The Rainbow Memorial” a national, traveling memorial to celebrate the lives of LGBT persons who have been murdered because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
Foundation Mission:
To honor and remember LGBT victims of hate crimes.
To engage and inform the public about hate crimes against LGBT persons.
To inspire compassion and greater appreciation and acceptance of diversity.
About the National Rainbow Memorial Project: The multidimensional, mobile Memorial is over 7 feet high and more than 75 feet in length. It includes the name, age, and geographical information of the hero on a star-shaped plaque attached to color panels. Separating the six panels are panels of photos corresponding to the heroes named. The photos are replicas of original artist’s portrait depicting each hero.
About the Call for Portrait Artists: The National Rainbow Memorial is soliciting portrait artists to donate their time and talent to paint a life like portrait of one of the many GLBT Heroes who have lost their life to hate and violence.
Completed portraits will be 24” X 24” or 48” X 48” inches in size on canvas. Featured portraits will be 8’ x 9’ feet. The complete collection of portraits will become an integral part of a National Rainbow Memorial honoring the lives of the slain in order to educate the public about violence and hatred directed at GLBT people and spread the message of acceptance and the value of diversity.
The Traveling Rainbow Memorial will debut in Washington DC and visit colleges, universities, major cities and rural America.

“All people who live honestly about their sexual orientation or gender identity are heroic, as it takes great strength and courage to face the daily struggles for personal freedom in the face of enormous opposition; to ultimately give their life for said freedom makes them-- HEROES.”
